“‘I wanna know what’s on your mind but I’ll never know.’ The closing statement on album opener “Bubby” sums up a feeling most of us probably know all too well. CHAPSTICK is an album that feels like sitting on your porch on a fall day, wanting to invite your friends over for a beer but simultaneously wanting to be left alone with your thoughts.

On “Cooper S.,” the band sings about a desire to move to Mars in a seeming tip of the hat to Watchmen’s Dr. Manhattan and the complete disconnect he feels from those around him. Album closer and title track “Chapstick” approaches this disconnect differently, with the narrator asking to borrow someone’s chapstick so that they can ‘feel what’s on your lips.’ The back and forth between accepting your alienation or trying to overcome it is the fuel that drives this album.

Musically, fantastic guitar interplay can be found on every track. These are high-energy songs that I can’t wait to see live. The production, care of Kalamazoo’s own Sun Spot Recording, is an absolute joy, capturing the band’s tight performances crisply without ever feeling uptight or artificial. There are moments on this album that sound like they popped off a long-lost Heatmiser record, which is the highest praise I know how to give.

Pick up this tape and let this album be the soundtrack to your fall. I know I will be.”
